And so we survived the winter once more..
Spring is showing her erratic face again
as she appears sunny, smiling just to hide, or
is overwhelmed by winter’s wind: warning refrain..
Weary we wait with baited breath–
Will there be yet another gusty grey day
when ominous clouds roll in
obscuring spring’ sunny, soothing face away?
And we grab drab woollies, covering cold skin.
Tender green shoots battle bravely, appear
abruptly from still solid frozen soil..
Trees transform with tentative,tiny, clear
leaves, lifting spirits so long in suspended turmoil!
Suddenly the soft, green haze on the ground
turns to a flowery carpet of every colour to be found!
I wrote this poem after a very harsh, lonely winter in the spring of 2012.
Living in SA means we do not have central heating in our houses. We do have a great
climate, but the winters in central SA are extreme!
