I am a white South African, a pale native, as Max du Press so aptly described himself.
I was born in 1951, not so long after the National Party came into power in 1948.
Politics, it affects us on so many levels whether we are interested ,aware of it or not.
We see it in our everyday lives, what we wear, what we eat, how and where we live’
It is defined as the activities associated with governing of a country or area. It also include the
political relations between states/provinces especially when it comes to trade and industry..
South Africa became important to the world when the Dutch people established a settlement
(Cape of Good Hope) in 1652 to provide fresh food and water to ships on their way to the east
and back to Europe.
Apart from politics, religion also plays a huge part in our lives, whether we believe in any god
or higher being or not. Even the way we worship can cause a shift in politics, the language
we speak, etc. Think about the way we were under British rule National Party, democracy..
There are Muslims. Christians, Hindi and other beliefs in our country. Other settlers came to SA
(Germans, French Huguenots, British settlers.
Some of them married Koi san, Hottentot , Malay people who were imported as slaves.
The Xhosa tribes also established a community on the eastern border of the Cape. They came from African
Countries (Burundi, fRwanda) during the early 17th century. Thus started our rainbow nation.
